RP Fashion
A big part of gaining freedom and restoration in our lives comes when we discover who we are in Christ as women and we are then able to gain understanding in how we were created to express what we discover about ourselves to the world around us. Each of us was purposefully designed to articulate the nature of God to the world around us in a unique and individual way, like no other woman can and how we do that is in and of itself an act of worship to God.
A large part of our self expression flows through our creativity. This month we want to unpack one piece of creativity that often gets overlooked or squelched in Christian circles. We want to take a look at how we express ourselves through fashion. In some religious circles, women are lectured about modest dress or oppressed with legalistic dos and don’ts. Make no mistake, in today’s sex saturated culture there is a greater need than ever for modesty and tact in our dress. Expressing who you are in Christ isn’t probably going to incorporate your cleavage! I’m also not giving us a license to go on a ridiculous shopping spree every month in pursuit of the latest Coach purse. We are called to care for the poor and advance the kingdom of God and we can’t do these things if all of our resources were exhausted at the mall. However, many of us have taken on extreme religious prescriptions and lost our freedom in Christ to express who we are and God wants to restore some femininity and beauty to the hearts of his women. It’s ok to be godly and attractive. God’s not uncomfortable with your beauty. He created it! There are far too many women in the body of Christ who have been told that being a woman of god means you have to look frumpy.
I once had someone imply that my nice outfit might have affected my ability to discern the voice of God in a prayer situation. This person's view was that my dress implied that I cared a lot about what people think. That is an excellent example of a religious prescription. The truth was that because I’m a free lance writer I don’t get out much during the week, so I like to dress nice to church sometimes. It’s a way that I express myself. Resist religious prescriptions and accept only what God says about who He has created you to be.
